Also, it’s a perfect place for children to socialize since international schools in Jakarta usually have students from different nationalities. Then how to register your little ones to an international school in Jakarta?

Do the research

Actually, there are several prominent international schools in Jakarta. They are all under Satuan Pendidikan Kerjasama (Collaborative Education Unit) designed by the Indonesian government.  All are guaranteed to give world-class education, but the grade may differ. Some may have kindergarten class, some may not. You can choose the one that matches with your children previous curriculum.

For example, there is A Nord Anglia Education School (NIS). They cater children from toddler stage (start from 18 months) to year 12. As a part of Nord Anglia Education, NIS adopts the British National Curriculum along with International Primary Curriculum.

There is also Academic Colleges Group (ACG School) Jakarta. For the grade, they open from kindergarten level to high school (year 13). The students here can benefit from being part of an educational institution that has branches spread all over the world. One of them is to continue their study in New Zealand.

  •    Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS)

However, if you are looking for a reputable school with a robust history, Jakarta Intercultural School (formerly Jakarta International School) can be considered. Established in 1951, Jakarta Intercultural School is the largest international primary and secondary school in Indonesia. The school has been accredited by Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the Council of International Schools. They have a North American-based curriculum. The United States Department of State even noted that JIS is one of the best schools overseas to prepare students to enter American universities.

If your little ones are preparing to enroll in an American university, JIS is definitely the best option. They are equipped with the best teachers that are considered to be the best international educators. JIS also comes with language learning options and co-curricular activities. For the High School, they offer both International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) programs.

Submit the application

Already picked your choice? Now prepare for the application. In JIS, submitting an application form is the first step for the enrolment. In the application form, students and their parents (or guardian) must fill some information. They also require some related documents like KITAS (limited stay permit) and a previous report card (or progress report) from their previous school. All is done online so no need to go to school.

JIS also advises communicating with their staff if your child is currently receiving learning support services or support services for behavior or wellness. The staff will let you know what kind of documentation needed for your child’s application. However, please take a note that submission of an application does not mean admission. JIS is a really popular international school and when it’s open for the next batch, their seats fill quickly so it’s better to prepare the documentation and any other requirements as soon as possible.

Meet the requirements

Now you have submitted your child’s application. What to do next? You must submit related documents as listed in your online application Dashboard. You may be asked for additional forms for submitting these requirements. Don’t worry, all of them can be accessed through your online application account. The requirements include:

  • Application Fee: IDR 5,000,000
  • Academic Records for the last 3 years of school (in English or officially translated in English)
  • Confidential reference
  • Student questionnaire (for Grades 3 to 12 students)
  • Parent questionnaire (for Early Years students)
  • Initial, progressive, and current evaluations or reports (only for students who require learning support services)

Follow the format and naming conventions to avoid delays to your application. It can be seen from the example form when you fill the application form. If your child is admitted to JIS, they also require some documentation such as:

  • A Letter of Sponsorship: for admitted applicants whose family do not yet have a KITAS. It also requires the child whose school fees will be paid for by a sponsoring company. However, if you’re part of the Founding Embassy (US, UK, and Australia) or JIS faculty, this requirement is waived.
  • A Medical and Immunization Clearance

Complete assessments

After you require all the documentation and pay the application fee, your child will go through an evaluation process that assesses their skills in English language, reading, writing, and mathematics (doesn’t apply for early years). The decision about your little one admission will be out after completing the evaluation. Here are how the evaluation will go.

  • For Early Years Program

The applicant and parents (or guardian) will meet with a member of the Admissions Review Board from JIS to determine whether the applicant is ready or not for the program. The meeting cannot be represented.

  • For Grades 1 to 5

Basically, the applicant will be reviewed on their previous school records and references. To ascertain the applicant’s readiness, the Admission Review Board may hold an admission screening test or an interview with the Admissions Review Board.

  • Grades 6 to 10

All applicants in this grade range will take an admissions screening test.

  • Grades 11 and 12

Same with Grades 1 to 5, applicants will be reviewed based on their previous school records and references. To ascertain the applicant’s readiness, the Admission Review Board may hold an admission screening test or an interview with the Admissions Review Board.

There are also English Language Proficiency Test Applicants for those whose English is not the first language.
